Maine is Fun

Posted by on 02.02.2013 in Big & Little

I think the cats enjoy being here because there are a lot of windows to look out, and they are much less likely to be startled by neighbors.

These are some of the fun things they have been able to do so far.

1. Hang out in bags.

2. Enjoy all the windows.

Hello Again

Posted by on 31.01.2013 in Big & Little

Hello again. I have been very bad about keeping this up-to-date. I have a bit more free time now so perhaps I will have more success.

The kitties are finally adjusted to their new home in Maine, but I feel badly knowing that a more significant trauma lies ahead in April (plane ride to Alaska). Bigsicle already thinks it is far too cold in Maine, so I don’t imagine Alaska will be his thing. His favorite thing to do is sit next to (or on) the vents and enjoy the heat.

But maybe they will make friends with a moose. Please excuse my pathetic photoshopping.

I promise to post more.

Bigsicle braves the beast

Posted by on 09.10.2012 in Big & Little

This weekend, we brought the cats home with us to Maine. Big is a bit less timid around less familiar people/areas so we let him walk around the house for a little bit. In fact, we were going to let him stay out of the dungeon room for even longer, but he started trying to eat the sea lavender that was out on the table. I’m not surprised by this, since we were given some to put out as decoration and the cats quite liked the smell of it… Jackie was getting groomed at the time, so we didn’t have to worry about her eating the cats. He bumped noses with Katy twice while they were sniffing each other, which was cute. We tried to get him to do a little playing with his da bird by bringing Katy out of the room, but he was still more interested in sniffing and hopping up on everything.

Checking out the plants.

Hearing a monster off in the distance.

Pounce position!

Pounce interrupted by an unfamiliar noise.

Exploring new heights.

Jackie went crazy when she got home and sniffed that the cat had been all over the place, including places that she can’t really get to, like the top of the TV stand. Ha!

Big (Sausage?) peed on the wall the day before yesterday. Yes, on the wall. I was a little horrified since he did it right in front of me and has had completely perfect litter box behavior until now…knock on wood! But he did it while in the litter box and tried to cover it afterwards, so I don’t think he was intentionally peeing on the wall, he just didn’t squat like he usually does so it went over the side of the box. And since I could tell it was unintentional, I didn’t stop him in the middle or punish him because I didn’t want him to think I was punishing him for using the litter box. But I did have a nice mess to clean up and was thankful for having hardwood floors.  The cat only pees once or twice a day, so it was a LOT of urine. I was concerned that it may mean he has a urinary tract infection or something else, but he has peed and acted normally since then, so it may have just been a fluke.

I went out and bought a hooded litter box with top entry just in case he decides that he prefers standing while peeing. So far, only Little has used it. Big jumped into it and started to dig, but Little jumped on the top of it and started swatting at his head. I guess the box has been claimed by the Admiral.

A cute photo taken by Jordan yesterday:

Please excuse the hairy rug. It’s the preferred location for wrestling and playing, and no amount of vacuuming could prevent the accumulation of Little fur. Actually, daily vacuuming would likely prevent it, but that’s just not going to happen.

Cat wears a hat

Sometimes we find the cats in weird places. Under things. With just their tails (or  heads) sticking out. Today Big was under a shirt, with just his head partially exposed. He was quite content there. Yesterday I found him with just his back end sticking out from his upside down bed.

Baby Bengal Cat plays games

Posted by on 05.08.2012 in Big & Little

I was going through my older external hard drive when I found some videos from my previous phone. The quality is pretty terrible (I can’t figure out what I’m saying in it), but this shows that Sausage has been playing Peekaboo with us since we first brought him home. I think that Jordan had been playing with him for awhile before I started filming, and at one point made him jump extremely high in the air which I was unable to have them recreate.

He still does this sort of thing, but much more intensely…he’s VERY good at doing the stalking. It’s almost like Red Light Green Light.

Special Raw Treat

Posted by on 16.07.2012 in Big & Little

I bought a bag of Nature’s Variety Raw medallions a couple months ago. I had a coupon for a trial bag, and I had a feeling the cats would like them. Sure enough, they both adore the food as a treat, and if it wasn’t so expensive, I would probably feed it as their main food. Every couple weeks I have thawed a medallion for each of them, and Sunday was one of those days. Sausage devoured his food (Raw + Regular wet food) in about 30 seconds. Admiral Little was a bit confused about his food, so he took longer. Whenever he really, really likes his food, he growls while eating it. This usually only happens when the food is new/different than what he is used to. Since Sausage finished eating far before Admiral Little, he sat from afar dreaming about stealing the rest of the food, and wondering why his little brother is such an idiot.

The video is just a short sample…he went on for several minutes. The video is also kind of quiet because the fridge happened to be really, really loud while I was taking this. I blame the 90+ degree weather.

Oh, and here is my favorite photo of the weekend:

Sausage being silly.

Evolution of the Poof-Tail

Posted by on 08.07.2012 in Big & Little

About a week before we picked Sausage up from his breeder, we received a few more photos of him. I noticed immediately that his tail was completely poofed out in each photo, reminiscent of a pipe cleaner.

Photo from breeder: Sausage at 11 weeks looking VERY intimidating.

I thought the tail was really odd. I know that its normal for cats to poof out their tails when being “aggressive,” but it seems like the the tail of a Bengal poofs a lot more than a regular cat.

Near the end of the video, he notices something across the room, stands, and poof-tails. Usually the tail is accompanied by “the zoomies” (insane bursts of energy). I hope he continues doing it as he gets older, because I think the tail is completely adorable.

Little the Grouch

Posted by on 07.07.2012 in Big & Little

We officially re-named the cats yesterday. I always said that I was going to name them based on their personalities- so I guess it’s taken a ~year to really figure it out. So, from now on, Little will be officially known as “Admiral,” and Big will be known as “Sausage.”

Admiral gets his name because of his love for his crinkle tunnel, which reminds us of a submarine. Sausage is…well, a sausage.

Admiral likes to growl at toys. I remember reading something that said that most kittens grow out of the behavior, but he hasn’t yet.  Today I brought out a new kicker toy, and he immediately was taken with the feathers and bells attached to one end. Like all toys that he’s taken with (including crumpled paper balls), he didn’t want Sausage (Big?) anywhere near it. He was prancing around with it in his mouth for a while, and I managed to get this video of his antics. He sounds so mean!

He’s all talk, though. He’s generally very sweet.

Mischievous Cats

Posted by on 30.06.2012 in Big & Little

Sometimes I wonder what the cats do when we aren’t around. Usually they are fast asleep or waiting patiently by the door when we get home, but occasionally I catch them doing strange things, or see the remnants of their actions.

Big has been trying to figure out how to climb on top of the exercise bike, but has a lot of trouble because there really isn’t anything to allow proper grip. For the past few days I’ve watched him try his hardest to get to the top, but he’s always ended up falling. Today I walked in the door and he was on top of the bike, meowing, with little interest in getting down. I have no idea how he suddenly gained the ability to get up there, and what other strange feats he and Little accomplish while we aren’t home…maybe it’s better that I don’t know.

Caught in the act!

Also, our neighbors across the lawn asked Jordan about Big yesterday (they were admiring him one day when we had them out on leashes), and asked about whether or not he was an exotic cat of some sort. I think Jordan accidentally said he was part Snow Leopard. Close enough.
